CBD Gummies & Edibles

How Your Body Processes an Edible Dose

When you take a CBD gummy or a CBD drink, the CBD first has to pass through digestion before it does anything else. It moves through the stomach and small intestine, where it's absorbed across the gut lining into the bloodstream, then passes through the liver before reaching wider circulation. This step, known as first-pass metabolism, breaks down a portion of the CBD before it reaches the rest of the body.

Once it's circulating, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in regulating functions like mood, sleep and appetite. Because a share of the dose is lost during that first pass through the liver, CBD gummies UK shoppers pick up, along with CBD drinks, tend to list a higher mg amount per serving than a comparable oil, to account for what doesn't survive the journey.

CBD Gummies vs CBD Drinks vs CBD Lollies

CBD gummies carry a fixed, pre-dosed amount of CBD, so it’s easy to fine-tune how much you’re taking without measuring anything out. Drinks work the other way round, since the mg count is dissolved through the whole liquid, so what you get depends on how much you drink rather than a fixed unit. Lollies sit somewhere in between: because you're sucking rather than swallowing, some of the CBD is likely absorbed through the lining of the mouth before it even reaches the stomach, on top of whatever gets digested normally.

What CBD Edibles Do and Won’t Do

CBD edibles aren't medicines, and no product in this category is licensed to treat, cure or prevent any condition. They won't get you high either, since UK-legal CBD products stay within THC limits too low to be psychoactive, and anyone on prescribed medication should check with a pharmacist first, since CBD can interact with certain drugs.

What they do offer is a checkable dose: broad-spectrum or isolate extract, a stated mg count per serving, and a batch-specific lab report. The FSA classes ingestible CBD as a novel food, meaning full authorisation is still pending industry-wide, and that applies whether you're browsing CBD Calm UK gummies or any other UK-made premium CBD products in this collection.

The FSA’s Daily Intake Guidance

In October 2023, the FSA lowered its recommended acceptable daily intake for CBD from 70mg to 10mg for healthy adults, based on a safety review that flagged possible long-term effects on the liver and thyroid at higher doses. This is advisory rather than a legal limit, but it's a useful benchmark for working out how many pieces fit into a day without going over it.
